The monastic complex of Alchi Choskhor, Ladakh, is one of the most informative monuments for early Tibetan Buddhism, but it is also exceptional in many respects. New research over the past year revealed more of the religious background of the site and allowed for improving the interpretation of many of its murals. This talk will focus on some of the more exciting new interpretations, such as the function of the Dharmadhātu Mandala, the relationship of the Alchi murals to the Litany of Names of Mañjuśrī (Mañjuśrīnāmasaṃgīti), as well as the relationship of one of its founders to Drigungpa, the founder of the Drigung Kagyu School of Tibetan Buddhism who died in 2017.
