Funayama Tōru: "The Tuṣita Heaven: Closer than the Pure Land? Xuanzang's Worship of Maitreya"

Funayama Tōru
February 14, 2009 (All day) to February 15, 2009 (All day)

By Invitation only

Abstract:

In this workshop, Prof. Funayama pays special attention to the passage describing Xuanzang's worship of Maitreya in the Grove of Pearls in the Garden of the Law (Fayuan zhulin 法苑珠林), juan 16, along with other related texts. A careful examination of the passage will reveal why Xuanzang accepted the worship of Maitreya, and not the Pure Land. The workshop will also shed new light on Indian and Chinese traditions concerning the religious stages attained by Nāgārjuna, Asaṅga and Vasubandhu, the founders of the two major schools of the Mahāyāna. Readings include text passages in Chinese, Tibetan, and Sanskrit.
