Dhammanandā Chatsumarn Kabilsingh: "What the Bhikkhuni Sangha Can Do to Uplift the Buddhist Tradition"

Abstract:

The Venerable Dhammanandā looks at the success of the Bhikkhunī Saṇgha (Order of Nuns) during the Buddha's time in contrast to the Bhikkhunī (or Bhikṣuṇī) Saṇgha in Taiwan as it exists today. She provides a glimpse of four centers where bhikṣuṇīs play a prominent role. These four centers comprise Hua Fan College, Fo Guang Shan, Tzu Chi Foundation, and Dharma Drum Mountain.

 

Speaker's Bio:

Venerable Dhammanandā, Chatsumarn Kabilsingh, PhD

On February 28, 2003, Chatsumarn Kabilsingh, ordained Bhikkhunī Dhammanandā, became the first Thai woman to receive full ordination as a Theravadin nun. She earned a PhD in Buddhist studies from Maghad University In India and has taught at Maha Chula Sangha University and at Thammasat University. Currently Venerable Bhikkhunī Dhammanandā is abbot of the only temple in Thailand where there are fully ordained nuns.
