Eric Huntington: "Frames of Scale and Geo-Spatial Transformations in the Buddhist Maṇḍala"

Workshop:

ARCS: Asian Representations and Constructions of Space

Meeting Description:

As part of his upcoming book project on Himalayan Buddhist cosmology, Dr. Huntington will introduce participants to philosophical theories, artistic representations, and ritual practices pertaining to maṇḍalas in Tibet, Nepal, and India.

Eric Huntington (Ho Center for Buddhist Studies postdoctoral fellow) studies the relationships between visual art, ritual, and philosophy in the Buddhist traditions of Tibet, Nepal, and India. Prior to joining the Stanford community, he served as a Cotsen Postdoctoral Fellow at Princeton University and received a PhD from the University of Chicago.

His current book project uses interdisciplinary methods to explore diverse portrayals of the cosmos in Himalayan Buddhism, revealing cosmology as a foundational framework for many aspects of religious life. Huntington also works on other topics involving religion and material culture, including the role of illustration in Buddhist manuscripts and the nature of embodiment in consecrated images.
