Tzu Chi (Ciji) is a humanitarian movement in Mahāyāna Buddhism. It was founded by and has been led by a nun, the Venerable Cheng Yen (Zhengyan, born 1937) in Taiwan. Since Tzu Chi founded its medical school in 1994, the total number of donors for whole body donation for medical education has increased from one in 1995 to over 34,000 in 2013. Drawing from ethnographic and literature research, this lecture will explore the phenomenon of a “surge” of cadaver donations in the context of the Tzu Chi mission and Buddhism in modern Taiwan.
